Nihat Berker, Kadir Has Vice-President and University Dean of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Sabancı University Former President (2009-16), MIT Emeritus Professor of Physics, received his double BS in Physics and Chemistry from MIT, his MS and PhD from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After postdoctoral research at Harvard University, he was faculty member at MIT in 1979-1999, including full Professor in 1988-2004. He returned to Turkey in 1999 and has taught without letup undergraduate, graduate, high school students and open-access courses. He served at Istanbul Technical University as Physics Department Head and Dean of Sciences and Letters, at Koç University as Physics Professor. He is the recipient of the MIT Physics Department Buechner Teaching Prize, Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, Science Award of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey TÜBITAK, Fellowship of the American Physical Society, MIT School of Science Teaching Prize for Excellence in Graduate Education, Outstanding Turkish Scientist Citation of the Academy of Sciences of Turkey, (first from Turkey) Humboldt Research Award, Best Faculty of the Year Award of KoçPost Student Newspaper, 100 Turks Giving Direction to Science, and the Honor Award of the Turkish Physical Society. He is an elected member of the Academy of Sciences of Turkey and the Academia Europaea. During his Presidency in 2009-16, he has continued his physics research and publications, and the courses he gave every semestre (“Phase Transitions and Renormalization-Group Theory”, ”Statistical Physics”, “Word Energy Outlook: The Coming Year”, “Water: Its Physics, Nanophysics, Chemistry, and Geopolitics”, “Alcibiades and Philoctetes: Talents and Rights of an Individual in an Oligarchic Society”, “Fantasy, Reality, Science, Society”, “Orientalism Practiced and Theorized: Durrell and Said”,”Augmented Mechanics”,”Quantum Mechanics and Nano Science”). Among the courses he taught at Kadir Has University are:”Materials Science”, “Fantasy, Reality, Science, Society, Law”, “Literatures of Intimate Separacies: Vizyenos, Armen, Seyfettin, Cumalı”, “Relations and Estrangement/Engagement in 7 Works by Sartre, Beauvoir, Camus”. In the YÖK Higher Education Council, High Performers Natural Sciences Program, he teaches “Augmented Mechanics”, “Electricity and Magnetism”, “Mandelbrot, Feynman, D’Arcy Thompson, Lavoisier: Advanced Readings in Basic Sciences” to topmost Natural Sciences students from all of Turkey.
